Sadly just like us, our animals get old and by so doing often begin to experience many health problems which put considerable demands on our time and resources. Looking after a sick or aged animal can be very time consuming.
The older dog or cat may experience urinary problems, incontinence, mobility problems, and a myriad of other physical disabilities just as we do. Whilst there are many things that can be achieved in alleviating symptoms, drugs, homoeopathy, nutritional supplements, lifestyle changes etc. There will come a time when the animal’s life comes to a close.
Reaching longevity is not the key. The quality of the animals life is the most vital aspect for consideration. With advances in Veterinary medicine an animals life can be prolonged quite considerably but we must always observe the animal and consider if his life is being severely compromised by illness and even the medication that is being prescribed.
It is immensely hard to make the decision that your animals life is coming to an end. It also feels like a huge responsibility to have to make the choice, but it is vitally important not to drag things out purely for our selfish desires of not being able to let go of our beloved pet.
